Golf Clinics and Lessons
Our qualified PGA Professionals are eager and ready to help improve your game. If you are new to golf, our professionals will provide you with an introductory programme to ease you into the game. Our Golf Clinics offer a range of structured programmes to assist junior and adult players in perfecting their game.

Welcome to Olivewood Private Estate & Golf Club’s Golf Academy. The Journey to results starts right here. Our team of professional, PGA qualified coaches and wonderful outdoor facilities, inclusive of a driving range, short game practice area and practice putting green allows us to coach all areas of the game.
The main objective of the Golf Academy is to develop athletes into players that are able to participate and compete in confidence, at their true potential. At Olivewood, we offer a variety of tailor-made packages suited to your unique requirements and needs.
Golf Academy
Individual Coaching
Come and learn to play the game and improve your golf with the help of one of our great coaches in the spectacular setting of our practice facilities and golf course. Whether you are looking for a ‘quick fix’ or want to work on long-term goals, our qualified TPI Certified and PGA Professionals are ready to assist you in reaching your goals. Individual coaching can be done once-off or one of our lessons packages can be obtained to reach those long-term goals.
Junior Coaching
Our program is carefully designed to develop children’s understanding of the game whilst attending to the key Long-Term Athlete Development fundamentals to ensure that the junior golfers foundation is cemented for future development. Our coaches are committed to teaching your children all aspects of the game, while providing a fun learning environment.
Ladies Coaching
Take the opportunity to learn to play golf in a friendly and professional environment, with the Olivewood Ladies Program that runs over a period of 8 weeks, led by our resident female TPI Certified PGA Professional. The programs are perfect for complete beginners and experienced players alike. In the Olivewood Ladies Program, our team of professionals design each ladies’ golf lesson with the women’s perspective in mind.
Golf Clinics
Group lessons and clinics are tailored to serve a bigger group of up to 10 golfers (maximum). Various clinics are available throughout the season, and are tailored to your unique requirements. Our Golf Clinics offer a range of structured programmes to assist junior and adult players in perfecting their game.

Matthew Thompson – PGA Professional
Matthew is an accomplished PGA Professional who graduated at the top of his class in South Africa.
He was introduced to golf at the age of 12 by his uncle, and his natural talent quickly became evident. By 13, Matthew was already representing Border. Growing up in a family deeply involved in golf course development, he was inspired to pursue a career in golf management, captivated by the transformation of landscapes into stunning golf courses.
As a junior, Matthew excelled in golf, representing Border Golf at every age level from 13 to 18. His talent took him to the Africa Games, where he represented the Eastern Cape, and he was honoured to play for the SA U21 Invitational team at the Dutch Junior Masters in Amsterdam in 2005.
Matthew’s achievements continued as a senior, earning him Border Colours for Golf. He competed on the Sunshine Tour in 2017 and claimed the Southern Eastern Cape PGA Order of Merit in 2021.
From 2014 to 2021, Matthew served as the Director of Golf at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club in Port Elizabeth. His deep connection to the Eastern Cape, where he was born and raised in East London, led him back home in 2022. There, he joined the Michelle de Vries Golf Academy as a coach, a role he held until 2024, when he was appointed as the Director of Golf and coach at Olivewood Golf Club.
For Matthew, golf is more than a sport; it’s a means of instilling values like etiquette, discipline, and integrity. His passion for coaching lies in the joy of watching young golfers develop into skilled and principled players, making his journey all the more fulfilling.
Zabastian de Jager – Bachelor of Sports Science & PGA Golf Foundation Degree
Zabastian’s journey with golf began at the tender age of four, nurtured by his father, a keen golfer who instilled in him a deep love for the game. He excelled in provincial golf for North West during his school years and went on to play for the University of Pretoria while pursuing a Bachelor of Sports Science and a PGA Golf Foundation Degree. His exceptional talent earned him a place in the South African university team. Post-university, Zabastian played for Gauteng North and later North West in key inter-provincial tournaments. Turning professional in 2018, he competed on the Sunshine Tour and Big Easy Tour until February 2024, when an injury led him to pivot towards golf course management and coaching. Zabastian started his golf management and coaching career at Bothaville Golf Club before becoming the Golf Manager at Olivewood Golf Club in June 2024. He is passionate about coaching and is committed to promoting the game, helping golfers enhance their skills through engaging, fun, and informative lessons.

Our coach emphasises fun and principled skill development in coaching sessions, to emphasize the importance of the enjoyment behind a good game of golf. Whether this is the introduction to your child’s golfing journey or an opportunity to further their current skill sets and game through coaching, our coaches are eager to share their knowledge and offer programs designed for the golfers’ specific needs.
With holiday packages available, as well as clinics split over a few weeks, your child will be able to learn more about the game in a fun and exciting way. Clinics will include, but not be limited to coaching juniors on the fundamentals of:

Olivewood Golf Club, ranked under Top 100 courses of South Africa, boasts country and sea views, designed to follow the natural contours of the land with beautiful Kikuyu fairways and bent grass greens. Framed by the indigenous forest, Olivewood’s par 72-course measures 6200m from the pro tees and 4900m from the ladies’ tees.
